The most consequential change is the operating system: where the MG3 used a roller-locked short barrel recoil mechanism, the MG5 is gas-operated with a rotating bolt. The result is a weapon that cycles more smoothly and reliably with modern propellants and construction methods.

    Modularity was a central design priority. The MG5 can be configured for different barrel lengths depending on the mission role, and it mounts equally well on a bipod for mobile infantry support or a tripod for sustained, stabilized fire at extended ranges. Optical sights and other enablers — laser range finders, tactical lights, and ballistic computers — attach to a standardized rail system that the older MG3 simply wasn't designed to accommodate.

    Ergonomics received similar attention. The MG5 features ambidextrous controls, meaning left- and right-handed operators can run the weapon with equal facility. Countries already running 7.62x51mm rifles and machine guns can integrate the MG5 without a parallel supply chain for proprietary ammunition.

    Incremental Replacement

    The transition from the MG3 to the MG5 is not happening overnight. The MG3 remains in service in certain roles, and replacing a weapons system with such deep institutional knowledge and logistics infrastructure takes time. The Bundeswehr began receiving MG5s in the mid-2010s, and the older weapons are being phased out role by role rather than through a single wholesale swap. It is a familiar pattern in military acquisitions: legacy systems don't disappear until the new ones are proven, supported, and understood by the troops who will rely on them.

    The MG5 isn't trying to reinvent the general-purpose machine gun concept.
