GRAFENWOEHR TRAINING AREA, Germany — The U.S. Army's most combat-ready airborne unit is learning a hard lesson from the Ukraine battlefield: first-person view drones and artificial intelligence are no longer experimental—they're essential. And the Russians are watching.

During the large-scale Saber Junction 26 exercise at Grafenwoehr Training Area in Germany, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Army's sole airborne infantry brigade based in Europe, deployed nearly 2,000 drone systems across the training grounds. The exercise ran through late August 2026 and featured a range of unmanned platforms—from ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) quadcopters to ground robots and AI-enabled one-way attack drones.

The timing is significant. With U.S.-Russian tensions elevated across Eastern Europe and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East driving demand for asymmetric drone capabilities, the Army is aggressively working to close a gap: American forces have trailed behind Ukrainian and Russian forces in operational FPV drone deployment on the modern battlefield.

What the Brigade Tested

According to reporting from Army Recognition and confirmed by Stars and Stripes, the 173rd ran paratroopers through a gauntlet of drone operations including live-fire FPV drops, AI-assisted target acquisition, and swarm-style reconnaissance patterns. The exercises were deliberately structured to expose troops to the electromagnetic chaos of a modern European battlefield—specifically the dense Russian electronic warfare environment that has proven devastating to unprepared units in Ukraine.

Among the systems tested was the AI-enabled Hornet one-way attack drone, a loitering munition that uses machine learning algorithms to identify and track targets with reduced operator input. The Hornet represents the Army's push toward “human-on-the-loop” weapons systems, where a soldier authorizes a strike but the drone handles terminal guidance.

The brigade also ran ground-based unmanned systems alongside their aerial counterparts—robotic vehicles capable of logistics resupply, casualty evacuation, and perimeter reconnaissance. The Electronic Warfare Problem

Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems have proven highly effective at jamming or confusing GPS-dependent drones and communications links. Ukrainian operators have largely solved this by building FPV drones that operate on civilian frequency bands, are manually flown line-of-sight, and carry minimal electronics that can be jammed.

The U.S. Army is wrestling with the same problem. American drones tend to be more sophisticated—and therefore more vulnerable to EW. The exercises at Grafenwoehr explicitly tested whether the 173rd's drone kits could hold up under Russian-style jamming. Early indications suggest the unit made adjustments mid-exercise, switching to more resilient platforms and emphasizing manual flight techniques over automated navigation.

A senior Army official told reporters that the service is “moving as fast as industry will allow” to field affordable, resilient drone systems to deployed units, acknowledging that the procurement process remains a bottleneck compared to the commercial drone industry's pace.

Saber Junction 26 continues through the end of August, with after-action reports expected to inform Army doctrine and procurement decisions for the next fiscal year.
